For Buddhists, Kandy is the sacred city. The focal point is the Dalada Maligawa also known as  Temple of the tooth, (optional) where the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined. There are many shrines and temples in and around Kandy, where you will see rare paintings, frescoes, wood and stone carvings.

Visit Royal botanical Garden (optional)

Peradeniya are about 5.5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri

Lanka. It attracts 2 million visitors annually. It is near the Mahaweli River (the longest in Sri Lanka). It is renowned for its collection of orchids. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees.Attached to it is the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka. The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Division of National Botanical Gardens of the Department of Agriculture.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO); just as the name suggests holds a unique disposition in ex-situ animal care. Its success and fame have traveled not just within the country but throughout the world to an extent where Pinnawala is synonymous with the Sri Lankan Elephant. Currently being home to 93 elephants the concept was actualized by the late Hon. Minister Kalugalle on the 16th of February 1975.  Pinnawala at the time was a very remote area with lush coconut plantations and most importantly an area where the availability of mahouts was not lacking. Also, the immense amount of water required by the elephants is supplemented with the availability of “Ma oya” running close by.

Madhu River Ride (Optional )

Enjoy a scenic cruise along the Madu River, a relaxing trip with plenty of interesting stops. You pass dozens of islets forested with mangroves and can appreciate the timeless natural rhythms of rural life. Your cruise in canopies, outboard motors powered boats, en route take in the view of a 200-year-old temple and watch the locals cultivating cinnamon. You may also see traditional fishing techniques in action and can view demonstrations of coir manufacture and rope making.
